When the off-road adventure experts at the Overland Expo needed a truck for their annual "Ultimate Build," the Nissan Frontier was the obvious choice. This year's Overland Expo Ultimate Build takes the off-road-proven Nissan Frontier PRO-4X and elevates it into the ultimate overland adventure rig.

Who doesn't like a good lifted, geared-up pickup truck? Don't answer that. Though if you clicked on this article, then you're probably one of the many who do. We also like trucks at Car and Driver, and we're stoked to see what the folks at Overland Expo came up with for this year's "Ultimate Overland Vehicle Build."

For the last five years, Overland Expo has created an "Ultimate Build" to flex its off-road muscle. Previous builds include a Lexus LX600, a Toyota 4Runner, and a GMC Sierra 2500 ATX4. This year, Overland Expo teamed up with Nissan for a rugged Frontier Pro-4X.

For example, every year they create an “ultimate overland vehicle build,” with the past couple of years being focused on GM vehicles: in 2025, they had a massive GMC Sierra 2500 HD AT4X AEV Edition, and in 2023, they presented a GMC Canyon AT4X, while in 2022, they doubled the efforts with a Lexus LX 600 as well as a GMC Sierra 2100 AT4X.

For the sixth annual Overland Expo adventure vehicle “Ultimate Build,” Nissan has come to the party with a special 2026 Frontier PRO-4X, modified to be the ideal home base for those who like taking the road less traveled. The special build makes its public debut at Overland Expo West this weekend (May 15-17) in Flagstaff, Arizona, before it tours other Overland Expo events and is used for media drives. So what did Overland Expo change, exactly?

The Frontier Pro-4X isn’t trying to be a luxury off-roader. Its strengths are a rugged build, easy modifiability, and straightforward repairability — traits that matter more for an overland project than extra screens or complex electronics. The build centers on a vehicle that can serve as a daily driver, tackle narrow forest trails, and still offer comfortable camping. That’s why the modifications go beyond suspension and protection to include practical living features.

The build starts with a brand new Nissan Frontier Pro-4X crew cab pickup truck. It’s a very durable platform that we have tested many times under a variety of conditions. It’s a body on frame midsize pickup truck with a solid rear axle and a locking rear differential. Next, Nissan, the Overlands Expo Foundation, and many aftermarket partners go to work in order to create one special off-road camping rig.

This year’s build turns the midsize pickup into a dedicated overlanding rig with a long list of aftermarket upgrades aimed at off-road travel and camping.

Overland Expo has selected the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X as the foundation for its 2026 Ultimate Build. And the final result is impressive, if not extremely desirable, for overlanding enthusiasts. The project marks the sixth year of Overland Expo’s Ultimate Build program. The initiative uses a production vehicle as a base, then adds equipment intended for long-distance, self-supported travel on rough terrain.

It’s coming from Overland Expo, which just crowned the 2026 Frontier Pro-4X its sixth annual Ultimate Overland Vehicle Build. And yes, this is the first time a Nissan has gotten the call.

Nissan’s Frontier PRO-4X is heading off the beaten path as the foundation for Overland Expo’s 2026 “Ultimate Build,” showcasing the midsize pickup’s off-road capability, durability, and adaptability in extreme environments.

This year’s Overland Expo Ultimate Build vehicle is the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X, which comes standard with a 310hp/281ft-lb 3.8L V6, Bilstein suspension, factory skid plates, Hankook Dynapro AT2 tires & locking rear diff. Available 360º camera views lets you see the terrain around the vehicle up to 12mph, too.
