It’s no secret that overlanding has gotten the attention of automakers with overland-specific trucks, SUVs, and even station wagons that come off the lot with lift kits, lights, suspension upgrades, and more. However, a recent patent filed by Stellantis seems to imply that Jeep has some plans to take the overland-ready vehicle idea to a whole new level.

This patent shows an integrated rooftop tent that would be compatible with the ever-popular Jeep Wrangler. Instead of requiring a rack or other mounting solutions, this tent will replace the upper section of the Jeep hardtop. The outer section cantilevers to the side, providing a large sleeping area for two or more travelers. The access to the tent is through the interior of the Jeep, removing the need to get out and into the elements.

The entire tent component appears to be low profile, so fuel economy and wind resistance should remain relatively the same as a stock hardtop. The patent details the tent includes power routing that can be connected to the Wrangler’s system or an auxiliary power supply. It’s always nice to be able to use electronics on a rainy day when you’re stuck in the tent. Speaking of rain, the Stellantis patent also includes an optional 270-degree awning for additional protection from the elements. While the mounting system isn’t detailed, it appears to be attached between the top of the Jeep and the tent module. The patent diagram also seems to show a couple of alpine windows along the roof line. It seems like the floor of the tent would obstruct any light coming in through these, but regardless, it’s a nice aesthetic touch and throwback to some other classic 4x4s.

While some similar aftermarket products are available for Jeeps, this tent design seems to have more living space and only requires switching out the top portion of the roof. Plus, this factory or dealer-installed rooftop tent component would be covered under warranty, offering another benefit to Wrangler drivers. Hopefully, this integrated Jeep Wrangler rooftop tent will be available soon, and we’ll see some out on the trails. Stay tuned to the Overland Expo blog for more details on this release.
