Ford Goes ’70s Retro With Bronco ‘Free Wheeling’ Package

If you’re of a certain age, you may remember the original Ford Bronco, and the many ways owners would customize and personalize the ground-breaking off-roading warrior. One popular customization option came from the factory: The colorful “Free Wheeling” trim package, which included desert-themed sunset striping and some blacked-out trim pieces. It was available for the F-150, Bronco, Econoline van and some other models back in the day. Now, Ford is bringing back the Free Wheeling package for the big Broncos.

Ford says the 2025 Bronco Free Wheeling is available now as an optional appearance package for the Bronco “Big Bend trim” and adds reflective red, orange, and yellow graphics on the sides and a retro-style silver grille with a red “BRONCO” logo. “Bronco has always been about fun and capability since day one and Free Wheeling’s looks kick that up a notch with its sunset inspired beach vibes,” Steve Gilmore, Ford Vehicle Personalization chief designer said in a press release. “We’ve modernized the new Bronco Free Wheeling in line with today’s fashion and graphic trends, including seats that mimic the color palette of the exterior stripes and unique pops of color that come together in an optimistic way.”

The Free Wheeling trim includes standard 17-inch gloss-black steel wheels, while those opting for the Sasquatch package will get 17-inch gloss-black machined wheels with a recessed red trim stripe. Ford says all Bronco Free Wheeling models will get seats with a mix of marine-grade vinyl and striped fabric upholstery (see gallery above). An optional Shadow Black painted roof is also available, along with the standard soft top. Removable hard top bits with molded-in-color will also be available.

Naturally, Free Wheeling Bronco buffs will want to complete the look with some 1970s-spec Free Wheeling swag including stocking caps, hats, vests, water bottles, patches, jackets, shirts and more. Ford says the Free Wheeling trim will be available in January of 2025. So far, no pricing has been announced and it does not appear that 8-track tape players will be offered.
